The concept did not appear out of nowhere. Frameworks built around structured product data are being written into law precisely because self-reported claims about recycled content, carbon footprint, or ethical sourcing have proven too easy to overstate and too difficult to check. A material passport gives regulators, auditors, and customs authorities something concrete to examine rather than relying on the good faith of whichever party happens to be making a claim.
On the commercial side, buyers of recycled and sustainable materials are becoming considerably more sophisticated. A decade ago, a supplier’s word that a batch of recycled plastic contained a certain percentage of post-consumer content was often sufficient. Today, large manufacturers and brand owners are under pressure from their own customers, investors, and regulators to demonstrate the integrity of their supply chains, and that pressure flows downward.
