Buyers across industries are growing less tolerant of unverifiable sustainability claims, and technology capable of supporting robust, interoperable passport systems has matured considerably in recent years. Organisations that begin building traceability into their operations now, rather than waiting for every regulatory detail to be finalised, are likely to find themselves better positioned as requirements tighten and as sustainability-conscious buyers become more discerning about who they choose to trade with.
Ultimately, material passports represent a shift from a supply chain built on trust and assumption toward one built on evidence and verification. That shift will not happen overnight, and it will require cooperation across an enormous range of industries, regulators, and technology providers to get right.
